Creative People
Ron | December 7, 2005One of my great desires is to be creative. To be a creator or sub-creator. I have dreamed of writing beauty and truth, communicating in ways that reach hearts as much as minds. That was the main motivation in starting this blog. It was to be a place to try my hand at creativity with the idea that by having this out in the public, I would be more motivated/disciplined to write every day.
While I enjoy what this place has become and will continue to post here, it has become more of a place where I link and comment and show off the incredible randomness of my mind. It is a place where I put on display what I do to avoid work. Perhaps someday I will do what I had hoped, someday when the kids are grown and the house is fixed, and I’m not depressed because of the stultying nature of my job.
But hey! This isn’t supposed to be a complaining, downer of a post! I started this post because I was thinking about how many truly intelligent, creative people God has put in my path over the years. Some are barely acquaintances whom I’ve met and maybe shared a cup of coffee, but quite possibly wouldn’t remember me. Some are old friends dating back to those halcyon college days.
So below are a few links. Some are bloggers, others aren’t. Take this merely as a brief celebration of creativity that has come across my path. (and by the way, if I know you and you aren’t listed, please leave a comment and I’ll correct my list - this isn’t really comprehensive by any means!)
Severt Andrewson - Artist (and great uncle)
Robert Auwerda - Writer and cousin (and the victim of horrible marketing decisions for a wonderful book of essays.)
Brett Foster - Writer/ Scholar
Jamin Gray - Blogger/ programmer
Lauren Gray - Blogger
Micah Gray - Musician (Yes, the three Grays are all from one very talented family)
Karen Hammer - Writer
Rachael King - Blogger
I’m sure that there are more, and as I think of them I’ll post them.

Ron,Wow, I'm really honored to be listed among "Creative People".
Rachael | December 8, 2005Ron,
Wow, I’m really honored to be listed among “Creative People”. I doubt my talent at least daily.
I want to write articles for publication. I want to write a novel. For now all I’m managing is a blog and it’s hard to imagine doing any more for a long time.
Kids take a lot of energy (for example, while I’m writing this, Ethan, my only child at home in the mornings, is blowing shredded coconut out of a bowl onto his face and laughing hysterically). If I had to leave the house to work a full-time job, I doubt I’d have the energy to write at all.
I told Scott a while back that I’d always thought I’d do great things but I was starting to understand that if all I do is raise four great men, well… really, who could ask for more greatness than that?
Scott can really feel you on the job front. I think you and he should quit your jobs and we can all move to a farm somewhere in a small community and learn how to be self-sustaining (and when we aren’t working hard, breaking a genuine sweat, you and I can rereat to our separate studies, overlooking the land, and write to our heart’s content).

Oh, and Marshall encountered Uncle Severt's "Character Sketches" at school.
Rachael | December 8, 2005Oh, and Marshall encountered Uncle Severt’s “Character Sketches” at school. I asked him if he’d told the class the artist was his “great-great Uncle” or Fouth-cousin twice-removed” or whatever My kids’ relation is to him. He didn’t, because he didn’t know the relation. (Is he your dad’s and scott’s mom’s uncle?).
My boys really enjoy his drawings.

n/m Scott set me straight. Severt is *your* great uncle
Rachael | December 9, 2005n/m Scott set me straight. Severt is *your* great uncle but no relation to us. Scott’s mom grew up calling him “Uncle Severt” because he was your dad’s uncle and your dad was her 2nd cousin. Families used to be a lot closer. That makes your kids and mine fourth cousins. I think I’ve finally got this figured out. Family trees confuse me.

Make no mistake Rachael, when I read your posts I
Ron | December 9, 2005Make no mistake Rachael, when I read your posts I definitely list you among the very creative people I know. And from what I’ve seen you are consistently improving as well so keep it up!
Family tree’s confuse me too - which is one reason I hadn’t responded yet.
You shouldn’t even tempt me with the farm thing - yesterday I was ready to sell everything and start over! If only I could pull off a Wendell Berry and have the farm, but really be supported by writing great stories.
