Free Food!

Ron | January 11, 2008

One of the things that I believe is happening more and more on a very wide spread basis in the evangelical world, perhaps due to the influence of the emerging/emergent church, is the recognition that we are called to mercy ministries. No matter your social or political stance, as followers of Jesus we are called to be others focused and to have compassion on those who are less fortunate than we are.

There are any number of ways to do this, but if you take a look to the left sidebar, you’ll see a new badge there that says “Give Free Food!”. By clicking on this badge, you will be directed to the Hunger Site. Once there, by just taking a second to click on a button you will be giving a cup of food to the hungry of this world.

All that happens is you are taken to a page of ad badges from sponsors, the sponsors pay for the food. That’s all there is to it. So take a couple of seconds and click the badge. You can read more specifics about the program once you’re there.

Re-awakening

Ron | January 9, 2008
Yawn…stretch…cough, cough…hmmmm…

After a long blog nap, I am beginning to wake up, rub my eyes, dust the cobwebs off of Dimly Lit. As I approach the 3rd blogiversary for this space I’ve been thinking a lot about what I want to do with it. Do I keep it going as it has been, personal ramblings about anything and everything? No, I think if that is all I’m going to do with it I’ll just shut it down and add yet another blog to the dust bins of the Internet.

One thing this break has done for me is to show me that I still have a desire to be a part of this medium for communication. I enjoy writing and I enjoy the conversations that can take place in these virtual spaces. As new technology continues to appear and new opportunities to communicate in various ways become available, I have a desire to understand them and take part in what is coming. In fact, I believe that as Christians we have a responsibility to do so.

Having said all that, I plan to continue Dimly Lit, though not necessarily in it’s current form. One definite change is that the content will become more focused. As I have spent time thinking and praying over the past several months, I have come to realize that my heart is and always will be turned toward the questions of redemption in culture. We are not to separate ourselves from the world around us, but rather to engage it and bring Christ into it. I want my writing to reflect that, to learn and practice the art of Biblical discernment as I look at music, books, or film. As Francis Schaeffer said, ““Each generation of the church in each setting has
the responsibility of communicating the gospel in understandable terms,
considering the language and thought-forms of that setting.” We live in an age of unprecedented media, and it is our responsibility to be there with the gospel in the best, most artistic, thoughtful ways possible.

Along with the more focused approach, I am considering a move either to my own domain, or at least to a different platform. Hopefully within the next couple of weeks I will have made a decision on that, and since I have a current readership of about 3, I don’t think it will be much of a problem to make the move!

So there you have it. I am still here. I still intend to post, but the break allowed me to gain some focus. Going forward, it is my hope to invite discussion and conversation and hopefully be another place in this medium where Christ is put forward.

Who Am I?

My name is Ron Nelson. I am a husband to a wonderful wife and a father to 3 amazing children. I am a follower of Jesus. I am a member of a wonderfully flawed, redeemed, struggling, beautiful, faithful community of believers that has often supported and encouraged me in my attempts to be a good husband, father and follower of Jesus.
